His father Michael Mongelluzzo posted a message to family and friends on Facebook about his family's unthinkable loss: "We are broken in the loss of our son Gianni. The outpouring of love from everyone is a testament to Gianni’s heart and soul," he said. "He loved everyone and had a zest for life and a path that was just beginning. My family will never be the same. The sun, the moon, and the stars no longer exist. We are unable to see in color, only black and white . . . Please remember him as the bright light that always wanted to help the next person who may have needed it."

He added: "As you know, my sons Michael and Frank and my daughter Ava and my grandchildren need mine and Zelda's love. We will unite and move forward thinking of Gianni every day. It will be a struggle but it is what Gianni would have wanted in the end. We are again overwhelmed by the love and support of the community and our friends. We love you all. It is what is keeping us on the path to experience life again."
