Southampton Town is part of the Climate Smart Community program, an initiative of the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, with a goal of combating climate change.

Severe storms, hotter summers, coastal flooding, and rising water temperatures affecting marine life, and the quality of life, in general, are all more common occurrences, town officials said. The CAP will offer a roadmap of recommendations and actions to decrease municipal and community Greenhouse Gas Emissions, and meet the town's 2040 goal of carbon neutrality, they added.
