In 1980, King turned her passion for baking into a career, and opened her first bakery called Kathleen's Bake Shop; she later launched Tate's, which grew become wildly successful. Even chef and talk show host Rachel Ray named her chocolate chip cookie the "Best Cookie in America."

"It was always my goal to make the best cookie in America," said King of the honor bestowed upon her by Ray.

Tate’s cookies are now sold nationally as well as locally. In 2018, Tate’s Bake Shop was acquired by Mondelēz International for $500 million.

Whole Foods Market was the first nationwide retailer to carry the cookies, beginning December 1. The cookies will also be available here, on Amazon, in select regional grocery stores — and at Tate's Bake Shop in Southampton.
