WEATHER UPDATE: Stormy Weather to Give Way to Summer Heat

The latest Long Island forecast from the National Weather Service.

Long Island could see some showers and thunderstorms Tuesday afternoon into the evening before rising temperatures the rest of the week will make it feel like July.

“The severe weather that covered a large area on Monday across the eastern U.S. formed along an upper-level system, which will be moving into the Northeast Tuesday,” says AccuWeather.com Senior Meteorologist Matt Rinde.

Any storms that do hit Long Island, however, are not expected to be as severe as originally predicted. A hazardous weather outlook for the island that called for potential gusty winds and hail has been canceled, according to the National Weather Service.

The chance for rain the rest of Tuesday is 30 percent on Long Island, the NWS says.

For those commuting from the city, take note that the risk of severe weather is higher in the Big Apple. Some storms in the city Tuesday afternoon and evening could produce small hail and gusty winds, the NWS says.

The last of any thunderstorms should be east of the region by sundown.

After a cool start to the month, it will really start feeling like summer the rest of this week. High daily temps should reach the 80s through the weekend. The mercury is expected to be several degrees cooler along the shore and on the East End.

The next chances for showers and thunderstorms will come on Thursday and Saturday.

For those heading to the beach Tuesday, the rip current risk remains high at ocean-facing beaches and there is a moderate risk of lightning.
