Woman Drove While Intoxicated, Hit Stop Sign, With Child In Car: PD

She's facing a felony charge under Leandra's Law after driving while intoxicated Saturday afternoon with a child in the car, police say.

BRIDGEHAMPTON, NY — A woman was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated in Bridgehampton Saturday after she hit a stop sign with a child in the car, police said.

According to Southampton Town police, the incident took place at about 3:32 p.m. in the area of Ocean Road and Church Lane. Passing motorists reported that a driver, headed south on Ocean Road, had left the travel portion of the roadway, struck a stop sign, and proceeded east on Sagaponack Road, police said.

Patrol officers located the vehicle a short distance away, with the driver in the front passenger seat and a child in a rear passenger seat, officials said. The ensuing investigation revealed that the driver had struck the stop sign, causing damage to the sign and the front end of her vehicle, police said.

No injuries were reported, police said.

Nina V. Popova, 46, of New York, NY, was arrested and charged with aggravated driving while intoxicated with a child passenger less than 17 years of age, a felony; DWI, a misdemeanor, and acting in a manner injurious to a child less than 17, a misdemeanor; she was also issued a summons for a traffic infraction, police said.

Popova was transported to Southampton Town police headquarters, where she was processed and held for morning arraignment, police said.
