Thief Smashes Door, Burglarizes Upper East Side Tapas Bar: NYPD

UPPER EAST SIDE, NY — An Upper East Side restaurant specializing in Spanish cuisine was the latest target of vandals, who smashed the eatery's front door on Friday morning, according to police.

The owners of Pil Pil, a tapas and wine bar situated on E. 78th St. between Second and Third Avenues, took to social media to state that their establishment had been broken into during the early hours of Friday morning.

Police said to us how are you so calm to get this phone call at 6 a.m. After about 17 times you get used to it," the post shared on Instagram read. "NYC we still love you, anything you throw at us we’ll never give up! Last night sales hopefully are in good hands feeding the hungry."

Police said that the break-in occurred at around 5:37 a.m. when an unknown individual entered the building by breaking the front glass door.

An NYPD spokesperson stated that they could not confirm whether anything was stolen but mentioned that the investigation is ongoing and, as of now, no arrests have been made.

Restaurant owners also posted an Instagram story this weekend showing surveillance footage of the suspect breaking the front door with an unknown object. Further footage depicts the individual moving behind the bar, grabbing the cash register drawer, and hurling it to the ground to force it open before seizing its contents.

As of Monday afternoon, the NYPD could not offer any more information on the incident.
