Former Columbia University Swimmer Qualifies for U.S. Olympic Team

Columbia Graduate Katie Meili will compete in the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janiero.

UPPER WEST SIDE, NY — Former Columbia University swimmer Katie Meili earned a spot on the 2016 Summer Olympic team Tuesday with a runner-up performance at the U.S. Olympic Trials.

Meili, who graduated from Columbia in 2013, recorded a time of 1:06.07 in the 100 meter breaststroke final, reported the Columbia University Athletics Department.

Meili announced her huge win Wednesday on Twitter.

As a member of Columbia's swimming Meili won a bronze medal in the 100y breaststroke at the 2013 NCAA Championship in 2013, according to her USA swimming profile. In 2015 Meili won her first national championship in the 100 meter breaststroke event.

Meili was born in Colleyville, Texas.
