Hospitals Bordering UWS Named Among Best For Child Birth In NYC

UPPER WEST SIDE, NY — If you're expecting a baby, you might want to move uptown, as two of the three highest-rated New York City hospitals for childbirth are on the borders of the Upper West Side.

U.S. News & World Report this week released its inaugural list of Best Hospitals For Maternity. The list recognizes 237 hospitals across the United States that are high-performing when it comes to maternity care.

New York City had three hospitals get placed in the high-performing category, and two of them are close to the Upper West Side.

• Mount Sinai Morningside: 419 West 114th Street
• Mount Sinai West: 1000 10th Avenue - between West 58th and 59th Streets)

The third hospital in the five boroughs to earn a spot in the high-performing category is the Long Island Jewish Medical Center in Queens.

Five other hospitals in New York were named high-performing in maternity care for 2021, but none of them are in the city.

To determine the Best Hospitals for Maternity, U.S. News evaluated 2019 data submitted by hospitals relating only to uncomplicated pregnancies. Data on high-risk pregnancies was not considered.

U.S. News looked at five different factors: scheduled early deliveries, C-section rates in low-risk women, newborn complications, rate of exclusive breast milk feeding, and option for vaginal births after a C-section.

U.S. News analyzed data from a total of 2,700 hospitals. Hospitals that performed well had fewer newborn complications, fewer early deliveries and fewer C-sections compared with other hospitals across the nation.
