UPPER WEST SIDE, NY – If you think Lincoln Center is only for opera and ballet, think again.

There’s still time to break it down on the outdoor dance floor in Josie Robertson Plaza at Lincoln Center, off Columbus Avenue between 62nd and 65th Streets, where sultry nights of all sorts unfold beneath a large disco ball hung above the plaza’s iconic fountain.

Start your Thursday night off with lindy hop specialist Gordon Webster at 6:30 p.m. Stick around for DJ Madame Vacile at 10 p.m., whose silent disco will feature a "unique mixture of rhythms from Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Mozambique, Ghana, and South Africa."

For newcomers, a silent disco typically involves participants in headphones, with dancers tuning into the same channel or channels. In other words, to the outside observer, the scene presents a remarkably quiet party.

Revelers can peruse a schedule of events at the dance floor – which run through August 10 – here. There are four more social dance nights this summer.

For those in search of a sedate alternative – but who are curious about the 10-foot-diameter disco ball (which weighs 1,300 pounds) – it’s quite pleasant to lounge on the edge of the fountain and watch the city go by.

If, on the other hand, you miss the plaza in its usual form, know that disassembly is scheduled to be completed by August 12.

How will that work, and where does such a large disco ball hibernate? Answer: it arrives in parts, which are later assembled.
