UPPER WEST SIDE, NY — A pair of Upper West Side subway stations will receive accessibility upgrades in the coming years, the MTA announced at the end of last week.

The 81st and 96th B and C stops are among the stations that the MTA intends to award Americans with Disabilities upgrades to in 2023.

The details on what the specific upgrades will be are not available yet, but multiple Upper West Side representatives voiced their support.

"I am grateful and relieved that we are finally moving closer to bridging the gaps in subway accessibility. Both the 96th St (B, C) and the 81st St (B, C) stations are vital connectors for local residents, as well as vibrant entryways to the jewels of our community, from the Natural History Museum to Central Park," Assembly Member Danny O'Donnell said in a news release.

Upper West Side Council Member Gale Brewer added, "The mild inconvenience of construction at these two stations on Central Park West will be outweighed by the major improvements elevators will provide those who are physically challenged.”

Despite the 81st street stations proximity to the American Museum of Natural History, it is not currently ADA accessible.

The MTA first announced in 2019 that the stop would become more accessible as part of its 2020-2024 Capital Program.

The two sided B and C train platform at 96th Street and Central Park West is also not ADA accessible.

Patch will keep an eye out for any details relating to what the specific upgrades will be at the two Upper West Side subway stations.
