UPPER WEST SIDE, NY - A new sandwich shop has arrived just in time to be added to Upper West Side dwellers’ fall lunch rotation.

Sandwell’s first brick-and-mortar shop opened earlier this month at the former site of Bettola at 412 Amsterdam Ave between 79th and 80th streets.

The menu features “healthyish” Americana-inspired breakfast and lunch sandwiches made with bread, sauces and meats produced on-site.

Offerings include the Turkey Meatball Sub with a traditional “Sunday sauce;” Mushroom Cheese Steak in a cacio e pepe sauce and the Lunchbox Special, which features turkey and turkey bacon house-cured in celery juice and roasted, maple-glazed and cut on-site.

“Like many Americans, when I think of lunch I think of sandwiches,” owner and Upper West Side resident Andy Gottlieb said. “I wanted to open a restaurant with a neighborhood feel that offers options for people like me who love sandwiches but craved more natural ingredients.”

Gottlieb, a graduate of New York City’s French Culinary Institute (now the International Culinary Center) has worked in an array of restaurants, including Palena in Washington D.C. where he worked as a sous chef and old-world charcutier under former White House chef Frank Ruta. In the Big Apple, Gottlieb has worked at Danny Meyer’s Blue Smoke and Sam Mason’s Tailor.

Gottlieb serves as the Chief Financial Officer and Partner at Blackfoot Hospitality, which manages five West Village restaurants: The Clam, The Mary Lane, Little Owl, Market Table and The Townhouse.

Sandwell’s hours of operation are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday to Sunday. The shop is closed on Mondays.
