Upper West Side Van Crash Victim Identified: Police

Police sources told the Daily News that the woman lay down in the middle of the UWS street before the van hit and killed her on Monday.

UPPER WEST SIDE, NY — Police have identified the victim in Monday's fatal crash on West 93rd Street as a Brooklyn resident.

Beatriz Diaz, 43, was killed Monday morning when the driver of a white Nissan van struck her at the intersection of West 93rd Street and Amsterdam Avenue as they were making a left turn toward Broadway.

The address provided for Diaz by the NYPD was 681 Clarkson Avenue, which is the location of the Kingsboro Psychiatric Center in Brooklyn.

Police sources told the Daily News that Diaz was homeless, and known to "lie down in the street."

Witnesses told NYPD that they saw her lie down right before the van hit her, reported the Daily News.

Responding to a 911 call around 11:50 a.m. Monday, police found Diaz unconscious and unresponsive on the street with trauma to the body and head. She was rushed to St. Luke's - Roosevelt Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

There have not been any arrests made in connection to the collision and the driver remained on the scene.

Earlier that morning, Udeshi Shruti Sundeep, 51, was killed Monday morning when the driver of an Audi sedan struck her in the intersection of East 76th Street while turning onto Third Avenue, police said.

Mayor Eric Adams vowed last week to redesign 1,000 intersections across the city, adding raised crosswalks, bike corrals, turn signals and other traffic-calming measures to improve safety.
