UWS Youth Chorus Named Best In The World At International Competition

Young People's Chorus, which has resided on the UWS since 2015, won five gold medals at the 12th World Choir Games in Korea.

UPPER WEST SIDE, NY — A longtime Upper West Side youth chorus just won five gold medals at the World Choir Games in Korea, including being dubbed the best children's choir in the world.

The Young People's Chorus of New York City won the medals at the 12th World Choir Games held from July 3 to 13 in Gangneung, Korea, which is the largest annual international choir competition.

“We are incredibly proud of our choristers,” said Young People's Chorus founder and Artistic Director, Francisco J. Núñez, in a news release. “It’s not easy to become World Champions, and our young people poured their hearts and souls into this competition. We are so thrilled their persistence, hard work, artistry and dedication has been recognized with such a prestigious title."

Young People's Chorus is a multicultural youth chorus that has resided in Lincoln Center on the Upper West Side since 2015.

The chorus is made up of nearly 100 children between the ages of 11 and 18 who compete across the globe in a range of genres from gospel and scenic folklore to contemporary.

The World Choir Games was created to unite people and nations through singing in peaceful competition, while also crowning champions in an Olympic style format.
