POSTPONED: Inwood Hosts Second Annual Jazz Festival On Sunday

The Inwood Jazz Festival, a day of free live music in Inwood Hill Park, was set to take place on Aug. 18. It was postponed due to weather.

INWOOD, NY – The Inwood Jazz Festival is back for a full day of live jazz in the green heart of Inwood on Sunday, Aug. 18.

Admission is free, so bring the whole family. Lawn chairs and picnic accouterments are encouraged.

The day opens at 10 a.m. in Bruce’s Garden in Isham Park (11 Park Terrace East), where Hayes Greenfield's Jazz-A-Ma-Tazz gives participants ages 1-8 the chance to experience jazz improvisation.

Most performances take place on the main stage, located on Pat’s Lawn in Inwood Hill Park near W. 218th Street and Indian Road, from 12:30 p.m. to 7:15 p.m.

Performers include Kevin Nathaniel Hylton & Spirit Ensemble, Alfredo Colon Quartet, Imani Winds, Steve Turre Sextet, Elio Villafranca and the Jass Syncopators, and the African Rhythms Alumni Sextet.

The day concludes with a community jam session at the Inwood Farm Restaurant, led by trumpeter Melvin "Tiger" Vines.

Founded and directed by drummer Aaron Scott and presented by IPRP 1970 Inc., which has been involved with restoration work in Inwood’s Isham Park for many years – including the creation and maintenance of Bruce’s Garden – the festival is a celebration of music and community.

UPDATE: The festival was postponed "due to heavy rains and the forecast of lightening and thunder," organizers said. It has not yet been rescheduled.

“We’re disappointed to delay, but we want everyone to enjoy the event in better conditions," wrote festival organizer Aaron Scott, in an email. “Jazz is in harmony with the diversity, youthful spirit, and vibrancy of Inwood. We’ll be back soon to celebrate together."
