⚖️ Cleveland Judge Suspended By Supreme Court + Wise Terry Francona

Cleveland Daily: Your quick read on today's need-to-know news and events.

Judges have a lot of power and leeway to run their courtrooms. It's a rarity for a judge to go so far afield that the Supreme Court steps in, but that happened to a Cleveland judge this week. And, sadly, the special Guardians season has come to an end. (Time to turn our attention to the Cavs.)

What else is in the news today?

  • 😶‍🌫️ Cleveland can't unilaterally expunge minor pot convictions after all.
  • 🍕 $8 pizzas at Cleveland Pizza Week are coming soon.
  • 📺 A Cleveland-area native with ties to Newhart, Cheers, Frasier and Modern Family is in town this week.

Was Pinkey Carr More Of A 'Game Show Host' Than A Judge?

Cleveland Municipal Court Judge Pinkey Carr

1) The Ohio Supreme Court suspended Cleveland Municipal Court Judge Pinkey Carr and suspended her law license on Tuesday, saying she abused her power and "conducted business in a manner benefitting a game show host rather than a judge." Among 100 incidents cited, the justices pointed to Carr requiring people to attend court during the height of the pandemic. Carr became a judge in 2012. As a Cuyahoga County assistant prosecutor, she helped to send serial killer Anthony Sowell, known as the Cleveland Strangler, to death row. Carr claimed a mood disorder caused by mistreated sleep apnea and menopause caused her behavior.

2) Just 21 pitches into the first inning, the Yankees hit a three-run homer and they never gave up the lead in Game 5 of the American League Division Series. The Cleveland Guardians lost 5-1, a sad end to an inspiring, unforeseen season. After the game, wise and seasoned manager Terry Francona talked about the future and his young team, which set a Major League record by starting 17 rookies this year.

“They’re hurtin’ right now, because they care, and they worked unbelievably hard. But I hope, as that wears off, they’ll realize how proud we are of them and how much we care about them. And I also reminded them this needs to be a starting place for us. This can’t just be a good story, we need to take this and go. I think we have a chance to have something really special.”

This also was the rookie season for the Guardians' new name. The franchise retired the Indians moniker, a name they held since 1915, as well as Chief Wahoo and all related Tribe accouterments. Some fans clung to the old name, while others embraced the present.

Jenny Myers Pratt, of Sagamore Hills, said it best as she put the passion of her fanhood into perspective on the Cleveland Guardians official Facebook page.

"I admit that I was not on board with the name change. Didn't feel it was necessary. However, I was ok with the Cleveland Guardians. I like the history behind the name. Throughout the season it became easier to accept. Then, last Saturday my husband David Pratt and I were lucky enough to attend game 3 of the ALDS. We witnessed the glorious 9th inning comeback and win!!! After all of the screaming, jumping, hugging, and high-fiving I realized something. The name change meant ZERO to me. I don't root for the name on the front of the jerseys. I don't root for the names on the back of the jerseys. I root for Cleveland!" ❤️ #ForTheLand

To our Central Division champs, thank you. We can't wait 'til next year!

3) Mayor Justin Bibb made a big splash in April when he committed the city of Cleveland to wiping out the criminal records of thousands of people caught with small amounts of marijuana. Turns out, the city cannot universally expunge those arrests and convictions. Every individual person must file an expungement request with their court on their own. In light of this, the city is pivoting its effort. "The city has reached out to every affected citizen to provide them with information to expunge and to invite them to an expungement clinic."
