Aer Lingus Gets Almost $12 Million In Revenue Guarantees To Fly Out Of Cleveland

1) A document uploaded to a city of Cleveland website and later removed showed that Aer Lingus is getting $11.8 million revenue guarantees over three years for flights from Cleveland Hopkins International Airport to Dublin, likely the largest financial commitment to get an airline to fly out of Ohio. About $9.4 million will come from the secretive JobsOhio program, the state's private economic development organization. Cleveland, Cuyahoga County and Greater Cleveland Partnership will pony up the rest. Midsize cities like Cleveland, where the airports are not hubs, are more likely to pay airlines for providing service.

2) Sixteen-year-old Megan Forshey of Westlake caught Oscar Gonzalez's game-winning, walk-off homerun Saturday, ending the 15-inning marathon. “I was just exhausted, standing up, watching the game,” Forshey said. “Then Oscar hit one, and it was coming right for me. I just followed it all the way through and it landed in my glove.” Forshey, who's played both softball and baseball, waved her dad off, too. “I was in shock. I’m like ‘I got it.’ I put my hand out to my dad, he backed away and then I caught it.”

Here are 5 things to know about the Guardians and Yankees.

  • The game at Yankee Stadium begins at 7:37 p.m. Tuesday and will be broadcast on TBS with Bob Costas calling the game. The last time the Guardians played the Yankees in the Bronx, fans pelted Cleveland's outfielders with bottles, cans and garbage after rookie Steven Kwan suffered an injury. New York won 5 to 4. The Yankees went 5-1 against the Guardians this season.
  • The last time Cleveland knocked the Yankees out of the postseason was in 2007, when the Indians won the American League Division Series 3 games to 1. The Tribe hadn't won a game against New York during the regular season.
  • The Yankees, who have an MLB-best home record of 57 wins to 24 losses, haven't hosted a postseason game since 2019.
  • New York has a $254 million payroll — the third highest in baseball. Cleveland has a $60 million payroll, ranked 27th out 30 teams.

  • Cleveland has hated the New York Yankees since Aug. 16, 1920, when a Yankees pitcher struck and killed Cleveland Indians shortstop Ray Chapman with a bean ball. That incident is featured in a new documentary, "War on the Diamond," by Andy Billman. The film debuts Nov. 15 on Amazon and other streaming services. (Watch the trailer here.)

3) U.S. Rep. Liz Cheney, the ranking Republican on the select committee investigating the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol, will appear in Cleveland on Nov. 1 for a conversation with Judy Woodruff, the PBS NewsHour anchor and managing editor. City Club CEO Dan Moulthrop announced the appearance Monday. "Congresswoman Cheney has distinguished herself as a leader who is unafraid to put principle before party. ... As she has made clear in recent interviews, though she is leaving Congress, she is not leaving politics. I think many in our community are eager to hear what she has to say." To accommodate a larger than usual audience, the event will be held at Cleveland State University in the Glasscock Ballroom.

4) The city of Cleveland will quadruple the size of its controversial ShotSpotter program after the City Council approved a $2.8 million contract Monday night. The expansion will encompass 13 square miles of "neighborhoods that have experienced a disproportionate rate of gun violence." Critics say police have conducted unconstitutional searches of people in the vicinity of ShotSpotter reports. ShotSpotter microphones, a secret algorithm and human operators to identify and locate gunshots and dispatch police.

5) "Everybody's going through something that we can't see," says Cleveland Cavaliers star Kevin Love. "I've mentioned that so many times, but I truly believe it. It might not be you in the first-person, but somebody within arm's distance is going through something." That's why the Kevin Love Fund hosted a mental health and safety summit for Greater Cleveland students and teachers at the Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse on Monday for World Mental Health Day. Love told them he wished when he was a teen that he knew what they were learning today. "Kids should be allowed to be vulnerable, and I think it's a new age of being able to open up and be stronger because of it," Love said.
