Former Lower Merion Fire Chief, Marshal Dies At 85

Harry Knorr served the township for 22 years as part of a long career in firefighting.

LOWER MERION TOWNSHIP, PA — The former chief fire officer and fire marshal for Lower Merion Township has died, according to officials.

Harry Knorr died Sept. 8. He was 85 years old.

Knorr served as the chief fire officer and fire marshal from 1983 until 2005 when he retired.

Before coming to the township, Knorr spent 21 years with the Philadelphia Fire Department, reaching the assistant chief in 1979 position, the highest civil service position in the city. He started with the department in 1958.

Knorr is survived by his wife Eileen R. Trainer, and many children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Services will be held Thursday, Sept. 12 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Stretch Funeral Home, 236 E. Eagle Road in Havertown, and again at 9 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 13 at Presentation BVM Roman Catholic Church, 240 Haverford Road in Wynnewood

A mass of Christian Burial will follow at 10 a.m. Friday. Interment is private.
