Residents Sought For 4 Lower Merion Township Advisory Boards

Residents are sought for the Health Advisory Council, the Historical Commission, the Shade Tree Commission, and the Zoning Hearing Board.

LOWER MERION TOWNSHIP, PA — Four advisory boards in Lower Merion Township are in need of qualified residents to join them.

According to the township, residents are sought for the Health Advisory Council, the Historical Commission, the Shade Tree Commission, and the Zoning Hearing Board.

Below are details on the advisory boards:

  • Health Advisory Council — The Health Advisory Council (HAC) is composed of 5 to 7 members and 2 alternates who serve 4-year terms of office. The HAC recommends plans and programs to the Board of Commissioners for the protection of the public health of residents within the Township and also advises Township officials concerning matters of public health. One member and two alternates are being sought. An alternate may participate in any proceeding or discussion of the HAC but shall not be entitled to vote as a regular member of the HAC unless needed to create a quorum. Professional experience in dentistry, epidemiology/statistics, public health law or pharmaceutical/clinical science is required. The HAC typically meets on the first Monday of each month at 7 p.m. More information about the HAC can be found here in the Township Code: Chapter 16: Health Advisory Council.
  • Historical Commission — The Historical Commission (HC) is composed of 7 members and two alternates who serve 5-year terms of office. The HC makes recommendations to the Board of Commissioners regarding the advisability of issuing building permits with respect to properties listed on the Township’s Historic Resource Inventory. One alternate is being sought. An alternate may participate in any proceeding or discussion of the HC but shall not be entitled to vote as a regular member of the HC unless needed to create a quorum. Professional experience in the field of historic preservation, particularly in engineering, architecture, or building/construction with a focus on historic structures is required. The HC typically meets on the last Monday of each month at 4 p.m. A full description of the HC’s duties can be found here in the Township Code: Chapter 88: Historic Districts, Article II.
  • Shade Tree Commission — The Shade Tree Commission (STC) is composed of not more than 9 members who serve 5-year terms of office. The STC typically meets on the second Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m. In conjunction with the Township Arborist, the STC has custody and control of all shade trees on Township property and all shade trees on the public streets and highways in accordance with the published rules and regulations of the Township. One member is being sought. Professional experience in arboriculture, forestry or landscape design/architecture is required.   • Zoning Hearing Board — The Zoning Hearing Board (ZHB) is composed of three members and two alternates who serve 3-year terms. The ZHB hears and adjudicates appeals, special exceptions and variances related to zoning matters. One alternate is being sought. An alternate may participate in any proceeding or discussion of the ZHB but shall not be entitled to vote as a regular member of the ZHB nor be compensated unless designated as a voting member to form a quorum. Professional experience in zoning or land use law is required.
