I-78 Toll Lane Reopens After Deadly Crash

Bridge commission says re-opened Interstate 78 lane can only be used by E-ZPass drivers for now.

The Delaware River Joint Toll Bridge Commission says it has reopened a toll lane on Interstate 78 shut down two weeks ago by a fatal accident.

The far-left lane on the westbound side of the highway in Williams Township closed on Jan. 13 when a tractor trailer collided with a car that was stopped there, causing a fiery crash.

The DRJTBC says that lane has reopened, but only for E-ZPass drivers.

"More repairs are needed before it can process cash transactions," the commission said in a news release. "Among other things, the truck dented the toll booth and pulled off its door as it caromed off the structure."

The accident killed Hackettstown, NJ resident Daniel Murphy. The truck driver, Robert Gawne, Sr., has been charged with homicide by vehicle for allegedly falling asleep at the wheel.
