This year, for so many reasons, people have sought solace in the outdoors and found a new, or renewed connection with nature. During September and October, the 23 environmental centers that make up the Alliance for Watershed Education of the Delaware River (AWE) will host family-friendly activities as part of the organization’s annual River Days festivities, to help bring people together safely for environmentally-focused events. Note: Due to extreme flooding at the Fairmount Water Works Interpretive Center, this event will be held at The Discovery Center (3401 Reservoir Drive, Phila., PA 19121). Hurricane Ida is the second storm in recent history that's caused flooding of the Fairmount Water Works that necessitated closure. As a leading Urban Watershed Education Center, we view the challenges of rebuilding as an opportunity for the Interpretive Center to come back better, stronger, and more resilient, with a preparedness for a future that will undoubtedly continue to bring about extraordinary environmental consequences associated with climate change.

Since its inception in the 1800’s, the Fairmount Water Works has been an architectural and engineering model for innovation, and we are committed to safeguarding this landmark building with state-of-the-art planning and engineering. Already, we have begun to research leading-edge technologies and best practices needed to restore the Center, while reestablishing it as an innovative learning lab that will pave a brighter path into the future of public education.
