Former Pittsburgh Catholic Schools Superintendent Michelle Peduto Dies

Michelle Peduto, who led the Catholic Schools of the Diocese of Pittsburgh, died of cancer on Tuesday.

PITTSBURGH, PA — Michelle Peduto, who retired in June as superintendent of the Catholic Schools of the Diocese of Pittsburgh, died of cancer Tuesday at her home in Sewickley.

Her death was announced by the diocese.

Peduto led the Catholic system through a diocesan-wide school reorganization plan and was at its helm to meet the considerable challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“She was a beautiful example of deep trust in the Lord," Bishop David Zubik wrote in a letter announcing her death to clergy and diocesan staff. "She leaves us a legacy of what it means to work for the building of God’s kingdom."

Peduto was the sister-in-law of former Pittsburgh Mayor Bill Peduto, who paid tribute to her on social media.

"She was more of a sister than a sister-in-law.," Peduto wrote in a Facebook post. "We met over 40 years ago and she became one of my most trusted friends. One of the strongest, honorable, compassionate people I have ever gotten to know."

Bishop Zubik will celebrate Peduto's funeral Mass Monday at 10 a.m. in Saint James Church (Divine Redeemer Parish) in Sewickley. The homilist will be the Rev. Thomas Kunz. The service will be livestreamed.
