PITTSBURGH, PA — Halloween still is more than two months away, but that doesn't mean you can't get into the spirit of the spooky season now.

Spirit Halloween stores have begun opening in and around Pittsburgh. The pop-up stores, which usually appear in vacant mall and shopping center storefronts between August and November, sell the creepy and ghoulish accoutrements that help make the Halloween season scary.

Spirit stores have been around since 1983 and about 1,500 of them open annually. Here are the locations of this year's stores in the Pittsburgh area:

  • Bethel Park: Oxford Drive next to Kohl's
  • Butler: Point Plaza next to Scrapbook Station
  • Carnegie: Washington Pike next to Shop 'n Save
  • Cranberry: Route 19 next to Phoenix Salon (now open)
  • Greensburg: Route 30 next to Gator Sports Cards
  • Homestead: The Waterfront in the former Victoria's Secret
  • Monroeville: Monroeville Mall next to Taipei Toykyo
  • Pittsburgh: Village of Eastside next to Petland (now open)
  • Ross: Northway Mall next to Bassett.
  • Tarentum: Pittsburgh Mills in the former JC Penney
  • Washington: West Chestnut in the former Joann Fabrics
  • West Mifflin: Hoffman Boulevard next to Fitness 19
