Most poll workers are elderly, and ongoing concerns over COVID-19 have limited the availability of poll workers in many areas.

Poll workers perform a wide variety of tasks that can shift depending on location, but are generally tasked with preparing polling areas, welcoming voters, verifying registration, and issuing ballots. Workers also explain how to use voting equipment.

With claims of voter fraud rampant in both 2020 and 2021, and only likely to dial up heading into November, a strong force of poll workers is vital to democracy, officials say.

"Having an adequate number of poll workers to staff polling places on and before Election Day will ensure voters receive the assistance they need at the polls, reduce the potential for long lines or congestion and help provide a positive and smooth voting experience for all voters," according to the Election Assistance Commission, a federal agency.
