LOWER BUCKS COUNTY, PA —Photographer Josh Friedman likes to venture around Bucks County.

He wanted to capture the statue of the famous abolitionist Harriet Tubman in Lions Park in Bristol along the Delaware River.

In the 1800s, Tubman (herself an escaped slave), helped many other slaves find freedom in the north. Bristol was a stop on the "Underground Railroad," where many people found safety on their path to freedom.

For this snapshot, Friedman tried to position himself so that the rising sun was near Tubman's hand.

"It reminded me of the Statue of Liberty, in which Lady Liberty is carrying a torch, which symbolizes enlightenment. For so many slaves who she helped to free, Tubman really was a 'Lady Liberty,'" Friedman said.

"Several years ago, as I watched a movie about Tubman, I realized some similarities to my family history. We had cousins who hid in the woods of Poland in the 1940s and fought back against the Nazis, just trying to survive. While many were killed, several survived the Holocaust and eventually made it to safety in America," Friedman said. "I find Harriet Tubman's bravery, intelligence, and moral conviction to be truly inspiring."

As this was a high-contrast scene, Friedman blended five exposures to create the HDR (high dynamic range) photograph.
