Barrington High School Named a 2016 Blue Ribbon School

BARRINGTON, RI—Barrington High School is widely recognized as one of the top high schools in the state. On Wednesday, the school earned national recognition as one the top high schools in the country.

The U.S. Department of Education has named Barrington High School a 2016 Blue Ribbon school, one of just 329 school across the country to earn the distinction this year.

The award is reserved for schools "based on their overall academic excellence or their progress in closing achievement gaps among student subgroups," according to a Department of Education news release. "These schools demonstrate that all students can achieve to high levels."

The last time the school was named a Blue Ribbon School was in 2002.

School officials cited the school's history of achievement, strong community ties and a host of programs to promote learning and civic mindedness in its application.

"In addition to our outstanding staff and dedicated students, the support of Barrington’s parent community has provided our district with opportunities that contribute to the success of our schools. Our climate is one of respect, trust and support," they wrote.

"National Blue Ribbon Schools are proof that we can prepare every child for college and meaningful careers," said U.S. Secretary of Education John B. King in a video message to honorees. "Your schools are on the cutting edge, pioneering innovative educational practices—professional learning communities, project-based learning, social and emotional learning, positive behavior systems—making you shining examples for your communities, your state and the nation."
