Update: Camp Watchaug in Charlestown reopened to swimming

Update, Aug. 12: The beach has been reopened with bacteria levels returning to normal levels.

CHARLESTOWN, RI β€” The Rhode Island Department of Health this week recommended no
swimming at Camp Watchaug in Charlestown due to high bacteria levels.

At the same time, the state health officials recommended re-opening Gooseberry Beach in Newport to swimming after bacteria counts returned to safe levels.

RIDOH officials will continue to monitor and review beach water quality through Labor Day. The status of a beach may change as new data become available.
