The sound of explosions and gunfire were heard outside a house on Raccoon Run Road in Coventry on Thursday.

McDonald said the noises were not bombs, but would not say what caused since he didn't want to divulge police tactics. The sound of gunfire came from inside the house, the chief said. Lachance is by himself in the house.

SWAT teams and members of the Coventry, West Warwick and Rhode Island State Police responded to the scene and have been there since. Neighbors were evacuated and police blocked off the area. National Grid cut power to the neighborhood and the incident has put much of the town on edge and hopeful for a peaceful resolution.

The standoff continued through Thursday. Shortly after noon, an explosion was heard, followed by gunshots.

More details will be posted. This is a developing story.
