Propane Leak Prompts HAZMAT Response In South Kingstown

Six homes were evacuated while firefighters worked to burn off remaining fuel.

SOUTH KINGSTOWN, RI — A gas leak prompted a HAZMAT response in South Kingstown Sunday night, the Union Fire District said.

"Our members are trained to respond to more than just house fires, and gas leak and hazardous materials calls are a great example of that," Chief Steven Pinch said. "We are glad that there were no injuries to any residents in the area as a result of this call. We’d also like to thank the Hope Valley HazMat team for their quick response and assistance on scene."

The fire department was called around 10:30 p.m. for a reported propane gas leak on Ministerial Road, Pinch said. The Hope Valley-Wyoming Hazardous Materials Team was called in to assist.

Six neighboring houses were briefly evacuated while crews worked to burn off the remaining gas.

"Due to the quick work of first responders families were able to quickly return to their homes," the department said.

A total of six homes in the area were evacuated while units worked to control the scene. Due to the quick work of first responders families were able to quickly return to their homes.

There were no injuries reported as a result of the incident.
