Victim Of Narragansett Kayak Accident Identified

NARRAGANSETT, RI — The victim of a Friday's fatal kayaking accident was identified by police Monday. Vickie Medeiros, 61, of Cumberland, drowned after her kayak overturned Friday morning.

Medeiros and her friend, 56-year-old Regina Treweek, also of Cumberland, launched their kayaks in the Narrow River, near Sprague Bridge, around 8:15 a.m., the Department of Environmental Management said. After paddling past the the sand spit, the pair entered the surf zone and tried to turn around and head upriver. Treweek was in the lead, and saw that Medeiros' kayak had turned over when she looked back.

The Narragansett Fire Department was called in for search and rescue efforts. Both Medeiros and Treweek were taken to South County hospital, where Medeiros was pronounced dead. Treweek was treated for hypothermia and released.

The incident is still under investigation by the department. Rough surf is believed to be the main reason that Medeiros' kayak overturned.
