AUSTIN, TX — Your spouse, partner or bestie might express disdain for Valentine's Day — the crass commercialism, floral price markups and forced, calendar-driven affectionate overtures of it all — in dismissing it as a fabricated holiday meant only to increase the profits of florists, candy makers and restaurateurs.

While such critique may be valid, we all secretly yearn to have our love celebrated in style with a grand romantic gesture. We're not animals after all.

Patch has got your back as we assemble a guide to romantic spots to celebrate the day of love and affection that's right around the corner on Feb. 14. It's never too early to start planning. Those of you intractably dismissive on partaking do so at your own peril, and are on your own.

Central District Brewing

This small-batch brewery located in the central business district is launching its Roasted Coconut Stout and Champurrado Stout on Monday, Feb. 17. The beers, developed in close collaboration with East Austin taco restaurant Nixta Taqueria and Executive Chef Edgar Rico, will also be included alongside Nixta’s Valentine’s Day menu as an optional beer pairing on Friday, Feb. 14.

“With this collaboration, we were really trying to develop beers that complement the flavor profiles found at Nixta,” Central District Brewing’s Master Brewer Adam Duley said in a prepared statement. “For example, the Roasted Coconut Stout pairs wonderfully with the restaurant’s Coco Rico paletas. We love the idea that some of Nixta’s customers will get an exclusive taste of these beers before it's officially available at the brewery beginning on Feb. 17.”

On Friday, Feb. 14, Nixta Taqueria will be celebrating Valentine’s Day all day long at its Eastside restaurant with a special Valentine’s Day menu, featuring items such as a whitefish ceviche tostada, a crispy dessert taco made with dulce de leche ice cream, a mole negro short rib taco, and more. Beer pairings, including the collaborative brews, will be available with a $5 donation to New Leaf Agriculture, a local nonprofit that connects refugees to sustainable farming opportunities by operating community gardens and a commercial farm. The regular menu will also be available for guests to enjoy.

Additionally, Central District Brewing will be serving beers on the patio from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. for a $2 donation per pour to benefit New Leaf Agriculture. Restaurant officials noted Nixta Taqueria does not accept reservations.

"It's been very humbling having our baby taqueria so well-received by our community in Austin," Chef Rico said. "We opened in October 2019 and have been stoked to see our vision come to life. Teaming up with Central District Brewing has been awesome — we can't wait to show everyone what we've created together! Through this partnership, we'll also be able to give back to an organization that constantly provides economic opportunities to refugees at New Leaf Agriculture, through the Multicultural Refugee Coalition. Come through, get some dank tacos and beers, and feel good knowing that you're also donating to a great cause."

Beginning at 4 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 17, Central District Brewing will officially release its Roasted Coconut Stout and the Champurrado Stout for all guests to try at its downtown brewery. Nixta Taqueria will also pop up at the brewhouse to serve its highly acclaimed Beet “Tartare” Tostadas and Coco Rico paletas from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. A dollar from every stout purchased that day will benefit New Leaf Agriculture.

Visit either Central District Brewing or Nixta Taqueria for more information.

Independence Brewing Co.

Independence Brewing Co. has collaborated with Garrison Brothers Distillery to host Beer My Valentine — a one-night event that's free and open to the public to feature a limited-edition beer bottle release, free bourbon tastings, Texas two-step dance lessons, flowers, chocolates, a live bluegrass band and 2-for-1 beer specials.

While the event itself is free, attendees can pre-order a “Beer My Valentine Kit” that includes:

Attendees can also pre-order a screen printed poster and a live screen printed t-shirt for an additional fee. Kits are $25 and can be purchased via this Eventbrite link: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/beer-my-valentine-tickets-90830078209.

The limited-edition bottle release is Indy’s first ever since last year’s legislative change to Texas alcohol laws, officials noted. The beer is a bourbon barrel-aged version of Convict Hill, Independence’s robust and heady oatmeal stout. It was aged for over six months in the same 20 barrels that yielded Garrison’s 2019 Balmorhea expression, which won Jim Murray’s Whisky Bible US Micro Whiskey of the Year in both 2019 and 2020. The resulting brew has a robust 10.5 percent alcohol by volume (ABV) suffusing a smooth and boozy drink, with sweet notes of vanilla and oaky tannins. Only 500 750 milliliter bottles were produced and will be available for purchase only at the brewery starting on Valentine’s Day. Because bottles are limited, there is a purchase limit of two bottles per person.

William Chris Vineyards

Those wanting to enjoy a romantic evening at home can opt for William Chris Vineyards' Valentine's Red 3-Pack valued at $95 (shipping included) featuring their 2017 Hunter, 2016 Enchanté, and Skeleton Key Red.

  • 2017 Hunter: When the fireplace starts up again, so does full-bodied red wine enjoyment. Usually a little much during the peak temperatures of summer, the richness (and higher alcohol content) of these wines provide the pleasure and warmth we all crave during the colder months. Red blends, and specifically ones with a significant amount of Merlot (like those from the Right Bank of Bordeaux), provide the body, spicy oak character, and rich fruit profile that make them a holiday roast’s best friend. This wine pair nicely with rich meat dishes and sauces that might overpower lighter style wines. It also pairs perfectly with cozy blankets and fireplaces, perfect for your Valentine's evening.
  • 2016 Enchanté: Each year, Enchanté (the first wine Bill and Chris created together) proves to be a testament to the high-quality fruit that the Texas terroir can produce. In 2016, heavy rains delayed the ripening of the fruit and it proved to be a difficult harvest. Despite the less than perfect growing season, the winemaking team, led by Chris, was not deterred and took on the challenge of the 2016 harvest overcoming the difficulties and creating another vintage of our flagship red that will inspire you.
  • Skeleton Key Red: In 2010, a skeleton key found on the vineyard estate became the inspiration behind this label, and this wine unlocks the flavors of William Chris Vineyards and Texas. Stylistically, this wine showcases a different approach to the traditional William Chris wine. Skeleton Key gives the winemakers the chance to express themselves creatively using more blending techniques and oak aging, thus defining an approachable introduction to Texas wine. In addition, the variety of grapes used in this blend translates to greater production capacity and allows William Chris to further support Texas farmers.

William Chris Vineyards is helmed by two of the foremost winegrowers in Texas, William "Bill" Blackmon and Chris Brundrett. Since founding WCV in 2008, WCV has set the bar high for other area wineries, being a trend-setter instead of simply following the crowd. Unique characteristics help them stand out, including:

  • William Chris Vineyards prides themselves on only using Texas-grown grapes and are also fierce advocates for the farmers that cultivate them.
  • Winemaking techniques at WCV are decidedly Old World, utilizing farming as well as local culture. In line with this thinking, the wines themselves serve as a true and unique reflection of Texasʼ distinctive terroir.
  • William Chris Vineyards produces many varietals of wine, including Mourvèdre (of which WCV is the leading producer in Texas), Malbec, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Blanc du Bois, Petit Verdot, Tannat, and Trebbiano, all of which are made using a "low-impact" method to ensure a quality sustainable product.

Yard House

Yard House has introduced a NEW Lifestyle Menu – featuring nutrient-dense ingredients, high-protein and more plant-based options, in addition to its existing menu of new American cuisine and globally inspired flavors. And when dining out, most people like to enjoy a cocktail, beer or wine. Yard House has perfectly paired a few popular dishes from the new menu with the perfect beers, cocktails and wines.

Appropriate for a day celebrating couples, the popular spot has introduced some interesting pairings:

Lifestyle Menu + Beverage Pairings

  • Pair the Steak Bowl with:
    • Old 43 – The rich and full-bodied Woodford Reserve Bourbon in this cocktail is delicious with steak, as it is loaded with notes of dried fruit and sweet spice, while a balance of citrus complements the earthiness of the mushrooms and the crisp fresh vegetables.
    • Liquid Compass IPA – This big double IPA with aromas of ripe stone fruit, sweet orange peel and a palate loaded with tropical fruits holds up to the flavors of the sirloin, while the tropical fruit flavors of the beer complement the fresh crisp vegetables found in the Steak Bowl.
  • Pair the Shrimp Zoodle Bowl with:
    • Yard House Honey Blonde – This light blonde ale with soft honey notes and orange blossom pairs perfectly with the fresh basil, lemon and garlic in the Shrimp Zoodle Bowl and adds a touch of sweetness that complements the shrimp.
    • Veuve Clicquot – The strong fruit notes of this champagne pair extremely well with the citrus and basil and offer the perfect balance and structure to complement the shrimp.
  • Pair the Avocado Toast with:
    • Grand Patron Margarita – With fresh aromas of agave and citrus on the palate and a pepper finish complemented by the rich orange cognac in Grand Marnier, this cocktail pairs perfectly with the freshness of Avocado Toast.
    • Noble Pursuit IPA – This margarita-inspired IPA with agave, lime and salt makes it the perfect complement to the fresh, creamy avocado.
  • Pair the Beyond Burger™ with:
    • Yard House Cuvee – The beer made to pair specifically with food! The bold characteristics and complexity found in strong Belgian beers and the brightness and approachability of a great Belgian Wit makes this beer chock full of bold fun flavors, pairing perfectly with the plant-based burger. The flavors of the beer hold up to the pepper flavor of the arugula and balances the sweet red onion and earthiness of the avocado.
  • Pair the Roasted Halibut with:
    • Jean Luc Colombo Rosé – The aromas of peach, rose petal, watermelon and tropical fruits holds up perfectly with the rich porcini miso broth, yet are delicate enough to pair with the light, flakey, roasted halibut.
