Austin Airport Passenger Traffic Record Broken In May

More than 1.2 million passengers went through ABIA, breaking the June 2015 record and a 12.5 percent increase from last year.

AUSTIN, TX – If you've suspected it's gotten really busy lately at the airport, it's not your imagination. The month of May proved a record-setter at the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport with more than 1.2 million passengers traveling through to their destinations.

A new monthly passenger record in May was set with 1,217,824 passengers, compared to the previous record set July 2015 with 1,165,811 passengers. May traffic was up 12.5 percent from last year's comparable period, ABIA officials added.

Here's a breakdown among the various ABIA carriers for the month of May:

  • Southwest Airlines passengers totaled 457,553, up 11.5% compared to May 2016;
  • American Airlines passengers totaled 211,495, down 8%;
  • United Airlines passengers totaled 206,068, up 28%;
  • Delta Air Lines passengers totaled 155,569, up 15%;
  • Frontier Airlines passengers totaled 52,257, up 93%;
  • jetBlue Airways passengers totaled 51,439, up 3%;
  • Allegiant Air passengers totaled 25,805, up 73%;
  • Alaska Airlinespassengers totaled 21,137, down 5%;
  • Virgin America passengers totaled 13,784, down 9%;
  • British Airways passengers totaled 11,266, down 5%;
  • Air Canada passengers totaled 3,432, down 9%;
  • Condor passengers totaled 3,390;
  • AeroMexico passengers totaled 3,009;
  • Volaris passengers totaled 1,151;
  • ViaAir passengers totaled 121.May 2017.

In terms of cargo, 15,255,708 pounds were moved around, up 13 percent compared to May 2016. International air cargo totaled 1,831,091 pounds, up 68 percent. Federal Express carried 8.2 million lbs., up 4.5 percent, while United Parcel Service carried 3.1 million pounds, up 53.5 percent.

Additionally, Air Services transferred 611,506 pounds of mail, up 73.5 percent and 1,731,673 pounds of belly freight, up 22%. In terms of aircraft operations, general aviation operations totaled 4,379, up 2 percent. Combined operations (including commercial and military) totaled 17,126, up 5.5 percent.

From January to May 2017: Passenger Activity: Total passenger traffic from January to May year-to-date was 5,305,648, up 8.5 percent, compared to January to May 2016. January to May 2017 enplanements totaled 2,663,479, up 9 percent. The term "enplanements" is widely used in the aviation industry, loosely defined as a passenger boarding a plane at a particular airport.

  • Southwest Airlines passengers totaled 2,003,672, up 5.5 percent;
  • American Airlines passengers 1,013,366, up 1 percent;
  • United Airlines passengers totaled 869,510, up 13 percent;
  • Delta Air Lines passengers 660,054, up 9 percent;
  • jetBlue Airways passengers totaled 243,270, up 8.5 percent;
  • Frontier Airlines passengers totaled 155,223, up 55.5 percent;
  • Allegiant Air passengers totaled 98,726, up 59.5 percent;
  • Alaska Airlinespassengers totaled 97,474, up 12 percent;
  • Virgin America passengers totaled 66,336 down 5 percent;
  • British Airways passengers totaled 51,968, up 1 percent;
  • Air Canada passengers totaled 16,644, up 1 percent;
  • AeroMexico passengers totaled 14,930;
  • Volaris passengers totaled 7,171;
  • Condor passengers totaled 3,390;
  • Texas Sky passengers totaled 604, down 5 percent;
  • and ViaAir passengers totaled 121.

Year-to-date figures from January to May 2017: air cargo totaled 75,139,568 pounds, up 10.5 percent compared to May 2016 and international air cargo totaled 10,618,523 pounds, up 49 percent. Federal Express carried 41.9 million pounds, up 3 percent. United Parcel Service carried 13.2 million pounds, up 27.5 percent.

Moreover, Air Services transferred 2,669,477 pounds of mail, up 75 percent, and 8,378,854 pounds of belly freight, up 18.5 percent. Aircraft Operations: General Aviation operations totaled 22,232 for January – May YTD, up 4 percent. Combined operations (including commercial and military) totaled 81,843 up 4 percent.
