Futuristic Liquid Nitrogen Ice Cream Shop Opening Next Week

The highly anticipated sweet shop will offer made-to-order treats in East Austin.

EAST AUSTIN, TX -- A unique new ice cream shop that uses liquid nitrogen to create made-to-order treats will open in East Austin next week.

Spun will open on Wednesday, Dec. 16 after much anticipation, Austin Culturemap reported. The upcoming ice cream shop was created by sisters Christina and Ashley Cheng, whose family owns the city’s popular Chinatown restaurant.

Liquid nitrogen has a temperature of less than 320 degrees below Fahrenheit, so it freezes dairy extremely quickly, creating a smoother texture than conventional ice cream. The technique also gives customers the experience of watching their dessert transform from “bottle to scoop” in under a minute.

The ice cream shop will also serve house-made toppings. It plans to have gluten-free options and use local products whenever possible. The opening menu will have classics like chocolate and vanilla, but will also offer more interesting flavors like popcorn and gingerbread.

“It’s like a big science experiment,” Ashley told Austin CultureMap. “Customers can mix and match and make their own pairings or try some of our recommendations.”
