Ortega Elementary School Area Most Authentically 'Austin' Neighborhood

Census Bureau data showed residents of this area have lived in their homes longer on average than anywhere else in the metro area.

EAST AUSTIN, TX: According to new U.S. Census Bureau data, residents of the East Austin neighborhood that surrounds Ortega Elementary School have collectively lived in their homes longer than anywhere else in the metro area.

The average homeowner in this predominantly Hispanic neighborhood has lived there since since 1976, the Austin Business Journal reported. The median length of residency in the area is 32 years. The data comes from the 5-Year American Community Survey from the U.S. Census Bureau.

Across all of Austin, the average the median move-in date was in 2007. Renters have generally lived in their homes for much shorter periods of time than homeowners, driving up this median. In Austin, about half of the population rents their homes, but less than 300 of the Ortega Elementary School neighborhood’s 1,300 residents are renters.

For renters in the entire Austin area, the median move-in year was 2010 at the earliest; renters in the Ortega neighborhood had a median move-year of 2008.

Homeowners across the metro area had a median move-in year of 2003. Those who own homes in the area around East Fifth, North Pleasant Valley, Chicon and East Cesar Chavez streets have a median move-in date reaching back to 1969 or earlier.
