Uber Wants To Hire 5,000 Drivers in East Austin

The ridesharing service is expanding big time in Austin.

Uber is hiring 5,000 drivers in East Austin.

“Over the past year, we’ve witnessed tremendous growth in East Austin. Today, one in three trips begin or end in the area,” Russ Garcia, Uber’s marketing manager, said on the company’s website. “As demand grows, so does the need for more drivers. This growth presents an opportunity to empower the community with flexible earning opportunities while also connecting residents throughout the east side to low-cost, reliable transportation options.”

The company is teaming up with the Austin Area Urban League, Greater Austin Black Chamber of Commerce, Greater Austin Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, NAACP Austin and Dress for Success Austin to help recruit drivers.

“We’re here today to thank and support a company that is spurring much-needed job creation and driving economic growth for minority communities and all of Austin. Uber and our partners gathered here today are working to break economic barriers by increasing access to transportation in East Austin and neighborhoods across the city,” Teddy McDaniel, Austin Area Urban League CEO, said at a press conference this week.

The next recruiting session is on Monday Sept. 21 t Dress for Success Austin on 701 Tillery Street from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m.
