Here’s How Affordable Rent Is In Houston

A new report looks at how the average May rent has changed in the U.S.

The average rent in Houston for May 2019 was below the national average of $1,442, according to a new report from RentCafe.

Overall, in the U.S., the average rent for May increased 2.5 percent compared to the previous year. RentCafe’s report analyzed rental trends in 260 U.S. cities and found that 64 percent of these cities had rents below the national average while 36 percent have rents above the national average.

Houston's average May rent was $1,101, making the city one of the more affordable renter hubs in the U.S.

Large cities in the northeast and California had the highest average rents in May, RentCafe says. Manhattan led the pack with an average rent of $4,200, followed by San Francisco ($3,648), Boston ($3,342), Brooklyn ($2,954) and San Jose ($2,741).

Oklahoma City had the lowest rent among large cities ($756), followed by El Paso ($773), Memphis ($789), Indianapolis ($863) and Columbus ($925).

Indianapolis is the most affordable city to rent among the 20 largest renter hubs in the U.S.

Along with Manhattan, Los Angeles, Washington D.C., Seattle and Chicago are the most expensive renter hubs in the country, according to RentCafe.
