Sugar Land City Council Increases Homestead Exemption

Sugar Land property tax exemptions will increase to 10 percent in 2016.

Sugar Land, TX -- The Sugar Land City Council recently voted to increase the city's homestead exemption by 2 percent, increasing the reduction of residential homes' taxable value by 10 percent. The exemption will go into effect with the 2016 property tax appraisal.

The most recent exemption is the latest passed by city council. Since 2007, the city of Sugar Land has repeatedly raised its homestead exemption from 1 percent of a house's taxable to 10 percent.

Because of Fort Bend County's patchwork of property tax rates, ranging from 2.8 cents to 3.8 cents per $100 of taxable value, increasing homestead exemptions is one of the city of Sugar Land's more effective tools to offer residents relief on their property tax bills.
