Irving’s parks and recreation is banking on a simple premise — grown-ups want recess, too. The city is hosting adult recess every Friday night at Toyota Music Factory in Las Colinas.

Any adult can participant, but it’s part of a wider initiative to reach people in their 20s and 30s, a demographic that is often underrepresented in city parks and recreation, said Amy Kinkade, assistant recreation director.

“Young adults tend not to participate in parks and rec,” Kinkade said. “We’re trying to change that and tap into a new market.”

To do so, the city also started an adult cornhole league this spring that filled up almost immediately, and it’s planning to host a new league in the fall.
