With the increasing possibility of Israeli-Iranian armed confrontation, the upcoming local lecture on “Managing the Threat from Iran: Can War Be Avoided?” by leading Middle East policy expert Daniel Kurtzer couldn’t be timelier. Kurtzer, currently a Professor of Middle East Studies at Princeton University, will address this issue at the B’nai Shalom Culture and Learning Center event on Sunday, September 15th
at 6:30 pm. He will speak at the synagogue, which is located at 300 Pleasant Valley Way in West Orange, NJ.
Kurtzer served as United States Ambassador to Israel from 2001 to 2005 and as United States Ambassador to Egypt from 1997 to 2001. During his 20-year career with the State Department, he was instrumental in formulating and executing Middle East policy under several Presidents. 
He served on Secretary of State James Baker’s Middle East peace team that brought about the 1991 Madrid peace conference, and chaired the multilateral peace talks that followed. Secretary of State John Kerry appointed Kurzer to serve on the Secretary’s Foreign Affairs Policy Board. A passionate baseball fan, Kurzer was named the first commissioner of the professional Israel Baseball League in 2007.
