The Burren

Hailed by John Renbourn as 'the best Celtic guitarist in the world,’ Tony McManus has also been listed as one of the 50 transcendent guitarists of all time by Guitar Player Magazine. Tony has both extended and transcended the parameters of contemporary Celtic music. Ranked by peers and predecessors alike alongside the guitar world’s all-time greats, his ﬁendishly dexterous, dazzlingly original playing draws on traditions from the entire Celtic world, along with still further-ranging ﬂavours such as jazz and eastern European music. Long applauded for his uncanny ability to transpose the delicate, complex ornamentation characteristic of traditional bagpipe or ﬁddle tunes – even the phrasing of a Gaelic song – onto his own six strings, McManus is increasingly being acknowledged also as a pioneering ﬁgure in bridging the realms of Celtic music and other genres, accompanying folks such as Natalie McMaster, Alasdair Fraser, Dougie MacLean, Kevin Burke, and Phil Cunningham. He represents Celtic music in the guitar world, teaching at Swannanoa and Richard Thompson’s music camp, among others; making regular appearances at folk and guitar speciﬁc festivals such as the Chet Atkins Festival in Nashville; the Ellnora Guitar Festival in one of Illinois's most prestigious venues, the Krannert Center, with the likes of Pat Metheny, Kaki King, Molly Tuttle, and Steve Dawson; has appeared at Guitar Festivals in Soave and Pescantina, Italy; Frankston, Australia; Issoudun, France; Kirkmichael, Scotland; Bath and Kent, England; Bachum and Osnabruck, Germany. He performed at the famous Ryman Auditorium inn Nashville in the “All Star Guitar Night” featuring Steve Morse, Bryan Sutton, Muriel Anderson, Béla Fleck, and Victor Wooten, and headlined by the legendary Les Paul. A self-described “tree-hugger that watches NASCAR,” Grant Peeples is known for his axe-sharp socio-political tunes, raucous humor and heart-gigging ballads. He is the recipient of the Focus Foundation Award for Creative Excellence, which cited the “humor, compassion and wisdom of his songs,” and their "unflinching social insight and cultural acuity.” Grant tours coast to coast, and is a repeat performer at various festivals across the country, inclkuding Woody Guthrie Folk (Okemah OK), 30A Songwriter's (Santa Rosa Beach FL) , Moccasin Creek (Effingham IL), Word of South Festival of Literature and Music (Tallahassee FL), Antlers &amp; Acorns (Boone NC), and Florida Folk (White Springs FL). In June 2023 he made his debut at the prestigious Kerrville Folk Festival. He has been a keen observer of the American condition for five decades, ever since a friend introduced him to the music of Bob Dylan. Through many years on the road, running a night club/music venue in Tallahassee, and after a ten-year stint on an isolated island off the coast of Nicaragua, Peeples turned to writing with a vengeance. He wrote poetry and songs that turned a critical eye on American culture and identity, the very definition of contemporary folk music. Cold Expectations - Fresh off their 2024 Rock &amp; Roll Rumble performance, Cold Expectations are eager to return to the Burren Backroom stage. They are a moody, dark, indie-rock band from Boston MA. Guitarist Steve Prygoda and bassist JoEllen Saunders Yannis have shapeshifted their own sound over time, crafting 21st century pop songs that borrow from the post-punk &amp; new wave past. Drummer Mike Demers (The Winter Project/Krebstar) fills out the songs with solid, driving rhythms. After a string of successful singles &amp; videos, they released their first full-length CE, Static Reactions, produced by David Minehan, via Red on Red Records. The Gypsy Moths - Garage soul shakers The Gypsy Moths are celebrating their 10th year as a band this year! The band released their third full length album (Sounds On) on Rum Bar Records in summer of 2023, with a handful of digital singles added to rotation on the “Little Steven’s Underground Garage” and "Coolest Songs In The World" channels on Sirius XM, along with significant streaming and terrestrial radio airplay across the US, Europe, Australia, and Japan. Girl with a Hawk is an American band formed in 2021. Fronted by singer/songwriter Linda Viens, the band includes Boston rock luminaries Richard Lamphear on keys, Dan Coughlin on guitar, Nancy Delaney on drums, and Daniel Bernfeld on bass. You may recognize them from the decade-long run with Cape Breton group Coig, but Rachel and Darren are also well-established and respected solo artists in the traditional music world and their playing in this new project certainly lives up to that reputation. Over the years, each has also gained recognition for their vocal abilities, most notably with Rachel receiving a 2020 Canadian Folk Music Award in the Traditional Singer of the Year category for Còig’s fifth album, Ashlar. While Còig’s repertoire always included songs, the focus of the group was really on the tunes. Rachel and Darren wanted to shift that focus for this project and feature their vocals more. They take turns on lead vocals and harmonies, and the repertoire is split about evenly between songs and instrumentals. Billed as a duo, they're traveling these days with Zak Cormier (PEI) on guitar, octave, and Acadian foot percussion. The result is a cohesive collection of music performed by some of the top musicians of our times. There’s an easy way about them, a sense of comfort that comes through in the music, in the mix of their instruments, the blending of their voices, and how the arrangements leave room for each other. Brian O'Donovan Legacy Series: Rachel Davis and Darren McMullen

Zedervan is an indie-Americana group born out of the vibrant music scene of Boston, Massachusetts. The band’s journey began at local open mics with impromptu jam sessions in bars and restaurants, fueling their desire to connect with community and share music. Drawing inspiration from the rich musical heritage of Americana and indie rock, the band carves out their own unique sound reminiscent of Neil Young, the Allman Brothers, Wilco, Weezer, and more. FORAGER makes kaleidoscopic pop for musical omnivores. A Brooklyn-based trio with motley musical heritage—rock, jazz, Afro-Cuban, Indian classical—the band has crafted a novel sound that satisfies the ear and subverts expectations. NPR's Bobby Carter called FORAGER's music "buttery" and "complex," remarking "where have you been all my life?" The band's debut album, Pipedream Firewood, came out in August of 2023 to widespread praise.

Little Plastic Dinosaurs are a Boston-based rock band bringing a new sound to the math, rock, and indie scenes. Their members Emma Harner (lead guitar and vocals), Luke Colombero (“stunt” guitar), Sam Anderson (electric bass, vocals), and Bradley Fiske (drum set), are inspired by an eclectic range of music, most notably folk, funk, pop punk, and math rock. The band formed in October of 2022 at Berklee College of Music, and has since played many shows in the Boston area. Their soaring melodies, clever songwriting, and rock-infused choruses have earned them a captive audience in Boston and beyond. Recently, Emma’s success on social media with short videos of both LPD songs and her own has gained the band more traction. With a debut album under their belts and a second album on the way, the trio are blazing a trail of catchy, power-pop-laden songs.Having already headlined at Splendour Festival, performed a tour in the USA, and been namechecked by Green Day, Sharp Class are certainly on the rise. The band take pride in delivering their live shows with energy, excitement, vigour and passion as they believe “that’s where it really counts”. As one fan said after seeing the band live for the first time “You can tell that for them three lads, it’s more than just playing a setlist of songs. It’s the reason they do what they do, and they do it very well indeed.” The band have been described as “Refreshingly Vintage” which seems like a juxtaposition, but Sharp Class make it work. It could be down to their dress sense, as they don an image that would slip in with the height of the swinging sixties yet still feels understood and relatable within the 21st century. Boston's MUCK &amp; THE MIRES were once described as “a mix of the 1964 Beatles and The Ramones” by legendary Runaways producer Kim Fowley (Fowley went on to produce several of the band’s records). The group achieved worldwide recognition after they were crowned #1 US Garage Rock Band by LITTLE STEVEN Van Zandt in his battle of the bands on MTV. They have performed coast-to-coast in the USA, UK, EU, South America, Canada, Mexico and Japan. And they have shared bills with many of their heroes including The Sonics, The New York Dolls, Ray Davies (The Kinks), The Flamin' Groovies, The Stooges, and even a Beatle - Pete Best! The Chelsea Curve - “The trio take the best parts of powerpop, punk, mod, rock-’n’-soul and everything in between to create something that sounds fresh yet familiar and fully conceived. Kinda like The Muffs took on Elvis Costello as an additional member.” ADD TO WANTLIST, NICK, APRIL 2022 Inspired by Boston and British culture, and properly bonded over a love of ‘70s punk and the mod style and sound, The Chelsea Curve are composed of Linda Pardee (bass and vocals) and Tim Gillis (guitar and vocals), with Bruce Caporal (drums) holding down the steady backbeat. The band launched The Singles Scene in 2021, an eight-month rollout of one new song every four weeks, earning a steady presence on both social media and in-the-know radio stations and shows around the world. The success of The Singles Scene led directly into The Chelsea Curve’s March 2022 debut record ‘All The Things’ via red-hot indie label Red On Red Records, which earned widespread blog and media praise and global indie radio airplay. From there, the stages grew larger, as did the crowds: The band played the 2022 Boston Calling Music Festival, skipped across the Atlantic for a UK tour, and held court at scooter rallies from Boston to Las Vegas. Spring of 2023 found the band releasing their latest single “How Can I (Resist You)?” racking up rave reviews and airplay. The first set will feature the Vintage String Quartet taking a nod from the hit show Bridgerton. We’ll travel back to favorite melodies and compositions from composers of the Baroque, Classical, and Romantic eras and then travel ahead to many popular covers of current hits. In the second set, the Vintage String Signature Trio will perform unique medleys of artists like the Beatles, Stevie Wonder, Led Zeppelin, Aretha Franklin, along with opportunities for interactive guessing games, musical history knowledge, and singing along for those who just can’t resist. Relive favorite pop, rock, and soul music with Vintage String’s unique, classical sensibility, but distinctly modern edge. VINTAGE STRING is a live music performance group founded by Vanessa Fitzgerald and Diane Hastings. Passionate performers and classically trained musicians, Diane and Vanessa have active freelance careers ranging from local pubs and symphony halls, as well as the national touring stage. The Burren Backroom Series, run by Tom Bianchi and 24 Hour Concerts, launched in October of 2011, and has already created many memorable, intimate, informal presentations as well as gaining a reputation as a listening room.  These shows are held in a truly atmospheric space, created by well-known traditional musicians Tommy & Louise McCarthy in Davis Square, Somerville.  The series hosts an eclectic mix of musical styles 6 days a week, sometimes presenting 2-3 shows in one day for all ages.  Stop by and join us for an amazing night of music!
