CHICAGO – The Gift Theatre, is proud to present Topdog/Underdog, written by Suzan-Lori Parks and directed by Shanésia Davis, September 12 - October 20, at Filament Theater, 4041 N. Milwaukee Ave. 
 
This darkly comic fable of brotherly love and family identity tells the story of two brothers, Lincoln and Booth, names given to them as a joke by their father. Haunted by the past and their obsession with the street con game, “three-card monte,” the brothers come to learn the true nature of their history.

Andrew Carr’s world premiere, “To Love you All Ways,'' is a deep dive into the
intersecting and interchangeable nature of love by way of expression through the outlet of percussive dance and music. “Every number in the show represents a new story being told, each taking a closer look into the countless avenues of love and human interaction that we observe in our everyday lives,” said Carr. “Whether it is the young, playful love that we encounter at the beginning of our lives, the shared love expressed within a community over mutual interests or the infatuation that we experience with a partner or even a crush. Everyone has given or received love at one point in their life and this show is about taking the concept of love and turning it into a journal entry with the stage and the dancers becoming the pen and paper. Even though the end of each piece may symbolize the end to one story on the surface level, the stories and authentic interactions that we experience as humans will allow these stories to live on forever.”

Milwaukee Ave.
 
After another female candidate loses the 2044 presidential election, three passionate but disillusioned women dream up a new branch of government - a monarchy to be run by none other than the Queen of America. This three-act femme-futurist, political satire features a gas mask fashion show, a ball gown made out of blue jeans and a walking, talking, plotting Siri. 
 
Coronation will have audiences doubled over in laughter and trembling with fear. The play positions female autonomy against the power and prestige of artificial intelligence, as it asks eerily topical questions like: Can we work within a system that was never meant to work for us? When it comes to the government, AI and the public, who is really in control?

CHICAGO – The Conspirators present a retooling of Commedia Divina: It’s Worse Than That, written by Sid Feldman and directed by Wm. Bullion, at the Otherworld Theatre, 3914 N. Clark St., October 18 - November 10. 
 
Commedia Divina: It’s Worse Than That is back after a COVID-cut-short run in 2023. Buzz Center Stage calls the original 2023 production “Outrageously funny—The Conspirators latest show is an absolute laugh fest, and may just be their funniest so far!” This highly recommended comedy tells the story of a suburban business heiress from northern Georgia (*ahem*) who is escorted through Dante’s (heavily updated) Nine Circles of Hell by holy man, Fr. Virgil. Will she learn the right lessons and mend her ways? Or, more likely, will Washington never be the same? In either case, Hell awaits! The Conspirators employ their firebrand neo-Commedia performance style to bring the audience laughs, tears and gut-punches with the Third Coast Review saying ”The Conspirators create bizarre and brilliant magic—a rollicking good time!” The show is deemed RECOMMENDED by all who reviewed it—the Chicago Reader, Buzz Center Stage and Third Coast Review.
 
The cast currently includes Christine Watt (she/her) as Malady Traitor Greene and Travis Barnhardt (he/him) in his hilarious turn as Sen. Mitch McConnell.

In 1947, Elizabeth Bishop and Robert Lowell's first letters sparked a friendship that spanned 30 years, crossing continents and filling countless pages. Their correspondence, a blend of poetry and personal musings, became the anchor of their tumultuous lives. Despite rare meetings, their connection transcended the bounds of a traditional love story, evolving into a profound friendship. Dear Elizabeth peeks into the private lives of two literary giants, revealing their vulnerabilities, insecurities and the intimacy of their bond. Sarah Ruhl creates a poignant narrative by weaving the poets' letters together, providing a window into their extraordinary connection, the enduring power of their words, and, ultimately, the transformative power of language and art.

In an otherworldly city obsessed with achieving absolute equity at all costs, Lily, a dissident at the end of her rope, meets Puck, the son of the city's charismatic matriarch. As their unlikely relationship grows and the city's enforcers close in, Lily and Puck hatch a terrifying plan: to revolt. Set in a tarnished society with twisted ideals, Evil Perfect is a messy and seductive play that attempts to reveal how good people with honorable intentions become evil. 
 
"Evil Perfect activates something deep in the core of us, something wild and untamed and yet leaves us questioning and curious as to why...and if it's even a good thing," said Director Jonathan Shaboo when describing the world premiere play. Playwright Spencer Huffman described the production as “a gruesome and sexy satire - it'll make you laugh and squirm in equal parts. I think audiences will relish in the play's savagery."
