Here are the top three stories today in Burlington:

  1. Burlington's city council election will use ranked-choice voting. The council laid out the exact details through an ordinance on Monday. Voters will rank their candidate choices. If the first choice is not enough to win a majority, then the candidate with the least amount of votes is removed from the tally. The process is completed until someone achieves a majority of the votes. (U.S. News & World Report)
  2. The City of Burlington is reportedly storing critical tech equipment in the basement of the Memorial Auditorium. The location is considered unsafe for human occupancy. If the equipment is somehow damaged, it would cause a technological blackout for thousands of Burlington residents. The city is currently looking for a better location for the equipment but has not located a good alternative yet. (Seven Days)
  3. A school threat detection software company that started in Vermont is the focus of a national investigation into the shooting that occurred in Uvalde, Texas. Social Sentinel's software was reportedly used by the elementary school for the 2019-2020 school year. It is not clear yet whether or not the school used the technology for the 2021-2022 school year or if it would have helped during the incident. (WCAX)
