2 Malicious Wounding Charges By Mob Filed In Fairfax County Homicide

Fairfax County Police detectives arrested two men in connection with Saturday's fatal beating of a male victim near the Cross County Trail.

FAIRFAX, VA — Detectives with the Fairfax County Police Department's Major Crimes Bureau arrested two men in connection the with the beating death of a man whose body was found Saturday off of Route 29 near the Blake Lane/Pickett Road intersection.

On Tuesday, detectives charged both 27-year-old Maldin Anibal Guzman and 45-year-old Wis Alonso Sorto-Portillo, both of unknown addresses, with malicious wounding by mob, according to police. Both men remain in the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center without bond.

In addition to the malicious wounding by mob charge, Sorto-Portillo, who is also known as Leonor de Portillo, has been arrested 10 times since March 2015 in Fairfax County, according to court records. His most recent offense occurred on May 26, when he was arrested on a misdemeanor public intoxication charge. He was found guilty in abstentia and was ordered to pay a $50 fine and $127 in court costs.

Police have not released the victim's identity in this case, who was killed on Friday, according to court documents. The two suspects were arraigned on Monday and are due back in court on Nov. 6 for a preliminary hearing.

Officers responded to the 9500 block of Route 29 around 3:04 p.m., on Saturday for the report of a body being found in a wooded area east of Fairfax City. A resident was walking along the Gerry Connolly Cross County Trail on the north side Route 29 when they noticed a man lying on the ground, according to police. The officers found the man with obvious trauma to his body. He was later pronounced dead on the scene.

On Monday morning, FCPD Chief Kevin Davis told Fox5 News anchor Steve Chenevey that two suspects had been arrested Sunday night, but their identities weren't revealed until Tuesday night. He described the investigation as a whodunit from the very start, with investigators starting with nothing.

"I'm just really proud of the hard work that our that our folks did to bring some justice to this family, another family that's still breathing, but at least we can hold the people responsible." Davis said.

Although two arrests have been made in the case, police say the case is still under investigation. Detectives actively looking for witnesses in Saturday's homicide.
