FAIRFAX, VA—Slots quickly are filling up for the annual Fairfax City Fishing Derby, Saturday, April 6, at the Ashby Pond Conservatory, 9817 Ashby Road. As the weather gets warmer, the fish start biting (or something like that), so don't be left out of the fun if fishing happens to be your thing.

Organizers say the pond will be well-stocked with "hundreds of trout," so hey, there you go. All that's required of participants is a fishing rod (a limited number of rods will be available to borrow), a bucket, a plastic bag and ice—that, and a $5 entry fee per contestant.

Three sessions are scheduled, each lasting 45 minutes: 9:30 a.m., 10:15 a.m. and 11 a.m. On-site registration will be limited, so it's best to do so beforehand. Also on hand will be volunteers providing instruction, pond education and fish cleaning demonstrations. Click here to register.
