Fairfax Water To Replace Water Tank At George Mason University

FAIRFAX, VA — Fairfax Water is set to begin construction on an all-new, 155 feet high water tank that will improve service to the George Mason University campus and Fairfax businesses and homes.

Construction begins in September and is expected to take a little less than two years. It will stand in the place of the old water tank, located on Patriot Circle on the George Mason campus, near George Mason Boulevard and University Drive, not far from Alan and Sally Merten Hall.

Fairfax Water officials said the new, 2.5 million gallon tank is needed because some locations in the service area have lower water pressure than other areas. The tank will serve the campus and areas of the city South of Main Street.Officials said neither campus or city residents should experience discolored water or lower water pressure during construction.

The new tank's shape will help maintain high water quality in the area, according to information from the Fairfax Water website.

The tank's construction will only take place on the campus; staff said they are working with the university on project logistics to limit the adverse impacts to parking and transportation at Mason and the surrounding neighborhoods.

Some $783 million in improvements to the Fairfax's water service is planned through 2027, according to the Fairfax Water website.
