National Arbor Day Ceremony Friday in Fairfax

Fairfax will celebrate National Arbor Day Friday with a ceremony noting its 30th year as a "Tree City USA" designee. Tree to be planted.

FAIRFAX, VA — Summon your tree-hugging inner-Lorax on Friday as the city celebrates Arbor Day with a ceremony noting its 30th year as a "Tree City USA" designee. It'll be held 10 a.m. at Daniels Run Elementary School, 3705 Old Lee Highway.

One will be able to watch a tree being planted, for one thing. For another, there will be talks about the significance of trees in the city. On hand will be Jim McGlone of the Urban Forest Conservationists of Virginia, who will present city officials with the Tree USA award.

The Tree City USA program, begun 1976, is a nationwide movement that provides the framework necessary for communities to manage and expand their public trees.

More than 3,400 communities are involved. They achieved Tree City USA status by "meeting four core standards of sound urban forestry management: maintaining a tree board or department, having a community tree ordinance, spending at least $2 per capita on urban forestry and celebrating Arbor Day."

And as for "The Lorax." It's what Dr. Seuss has described as perhaps the favorite children's book he ever wrote. And yes, it's about trees. Click here for a refresher. And anyone with questions about the city's celebration, call 703-385-7995.
