FREDERICKSBURG, VA — How did a 17-year-old from Stafford County end up with a firearm that was stolen nearly 50 years ago in New York City? That's the question Stafford County Sheriff's deputies are trying to answer.

Around 5:44 p.m. on Sunday, Deputy I.E. Baldi responded for the report of a disturbance at Meadow Drive in Brookfield, where he found a 17-year-old in possession of a firearm. After running the serial number of the weapon, Baldi discovered that it had been stolen in New York City in 1976, according to SCSO.

Baldi issued the juvenile a criminal complaint for possession of a stolen firearm. Juvenile intake opted to detain the 17-year-old, who was then held in the Juvenile Detention Center, according to the sheriff's office. The case remains under investigation.
