Come to the Chapman DeMary Trail on Sunday, August 25 at 1 p.m. to join John DeMary on a walk in the woods! John DeMary is a retired Loudoun Valley High School environmental explorations teacher who help establish the Chapman DeMary Trail. This walk is a special opportunity to meet and learn from one of the namesakes of the Chapman DeMary Trail. This event is hosted by the Purcellville Parks and Recreation Advisory Board and is part of the Discover Nature’s Secrets series held the last Sunday of each month.

Register online to attend: https://purcellvilleva.gov/881/Monthly-Nature-Walks.

The Chapman DeMary Trail officially opened in 2009. This 10-acre area is considered to be the last stand of old growth forest in the Town. The trail runs along the South Fork Catoctin Creek which is part of the Chesapeake Bay Watershed. The trail is named after John Chapman who offered to open his property to the public to be used as an outdoor classroom and nature trail, and retired Loudoun Valley High School teacher John DeMary who encouraged his students to present their vision for this area to the Purcellville Town Council.

The Chapman DeMary Trail is open to the public for environmental exploration, education, and recreation. Trail projects encourage environmental stewardship and have engaged students, scouts, and members of the community in learning about and protecting this habitat. The Town of Purcellville holds the conservation easement for this privately-owned property. The entrance and parking for the Chapman DeMary Trail is behind the building at 205 East Hirst Road in Purcellville.

Before coming to the August 25 event, be sure to go on the Summer Trivia Walk at the Chapman DeMary Trail and get all the answers. Bring your completed answer sheet with you to the nature walk to get a prize. Copies of the trivia walk sheet are at the trail. The sheet is also available online at https://purcellvilleva.gov/881/Monthly-Nature-Walks.

Learn more and register online on the Monthly Nature Walks page in the Events and Activities section of the Town of Purcellville’s website at www.PurcellvilleVa.gov.
