Serving Together, Creating Together is an Inaugural Exhibition of art by participants in the Workhouse Military in The Arts Initiative (WMAI)
While we honor our active duty military, veterans, and their families for their service as protectors and as care-takers of protectors of our Democracy, this exhibition intends to honor these proud Americans as artists. It is a celebration of their creativity, their craftsmanship, and their ingenuity. The varied works on display are selective representatives from a large body of independent and collaborative work produced over the past two years in the Workhouse Military Initiative In The Arts family workshops, open studios, and classes.

George Mason's Gunston Hall

Workhouse Arts Center

Raised in the vibrant music scene of the DC area, flutist, vocalist and composer Alex Hamburger was immersed in the world of art from her earliest years. Growing up as the daughter of accomplished artists—a drummer and a dancer—Alex's passion for music ignited at a young age. After exploring other musical landscapes and studying at prestigious institutions, Alex has returned to DC with a renewed sense of purpose and a desire to make a resounding impact. Part of the Mt. Vernon Nights concert series. This series of free, public concerts at the Workhouse Arts Center features a variety of musical performances reflecting Fairfax County’s diversity, culture, and community spirit. Bring a picnic dinner and a blanket and enjoy one of Fairfax County’s special summer traditions. Food and beverages are also available for purchase. Start your evening early at the Workhouse by exploring its vibrant arts scene prior to the show.

Join us for a unique story time experience at Gunston Hall! During this one-hour program young learners and their caregivers will explore a picture book, engage with hands-on activities, and investigate the historic area on a modified tour.
Gunston Hall requires at least one adult for every two children. This program is aimed at children aged 2-5, but siblings are always welcome.
Registration is preferred.

The topic of this month’s Sound Bath is neutrality at the basis from which advanced perception can arise, involving an open mind. But what is an open mind? Is it possible to disengage from preconceived notions built on assumptions and patterns which often conclude automatically before ‘we’ even had a chance to think? Come and experience Iris’ huge AJNA Singing Bowl, harmonically paired with further instruments, inviting us into a powerful state of consciousness through Gamma brainwaves. These types of brain waves occur naturally when we deeply concentrate or sense to be in perfect flow. The specific sound spectrum offered here endorses liberation through effortless, relaxed focus which opens new pathways and lets us recognize the relevance of interconnections - all paramount to tap into our highest potential. A Workhouse “Sound Bath” is where people come together for a pleasant and relaxing experience created through sound by a sound healing practitioner who is playing live a variety of specific instruments. After a brief introduction to sound in the beginning, the listeners will be "immersed" in soft sound vibrations lying on a mat or sitting on a chair. Guided by the sound healing practitioner, the listeners will have time to return from their journey and will have the opportunity to share their experience, if desired, at the end of the Sound Bath. Each Sound Bath is uniquely created with a selection of instruments that could include Tibetan singing bowls, gongs, drums, bells, and harps as well as crystal singing bowls, tuning forks, or others. Come and experience the benefits of this sound immersion to deeply relax, lift, and rejuvenate your whole being on a Sunday afternoon! Benefits of a SOUND BATH can include: Calming of the nervous system Inducing better sleep Uplifting of mood Increased ability to focus Restoration and strengthening An overall greater sense of well-being Bring a mat, blanket, and pillow for your comfort; chairs are provided. The Sound Baths are primarily designed for adults, and it is not recommended for children to attend. However, exceptions may be made for children aged 12 or older who can remain quiet for 60 minutes. To ensure the comfort of other attendees, parents may be requested to leave with their children in case of any disruptions. Join the Sound Bath at Art of Movement, every 3rd Sunday.

The Lucy Burns Museum at the Workhouse Arts Center is proud to present the second season of Learning at Lunch, a series illuminating aspects of the former prison’s 91-year history. Each month, we invite an expert to tackle a topic from our complicated past. After a brief 30-minute talk, presenters answer audience questions, and all attendees are invited to visit the museum following the program. Table seating provided and attendees are encouraged to bring their own lunch; snacks and beverages available for purchase.
As Women’s Equality Day approaches, consider the role the Workhouse played in the Women’s Suffrage Movement, holding over 70 of the suffragists who picketed the White House. There were other suffragists never arrested or jailed who contributed to the movement in other and equally important ways. Among them were a rainmaker, a cartoonist, and a lady with a typewriter and a telephone. Author and long-term museum volunteer Kenena Spalding highlights their contributions.
