ALEXANDRIA, VA — While Old Town has seen some business turnover, one constant over the last 15 years has been a place for knitting supplies and workshops.

Danielle Romanetti's fibre space is celebrating its 15th anniversary. The shop at 1319 Price Street sells unique yarns, hard-to-find imports and fibers from local and U.S. sources. Fibre space also offers classes for all skill levels and workshops taught by nationally-known knitwear designers.

"Fibre space has grown into so much more than a retail shop in the last 15 years," said Romanetti in a statement. "It has become a third space for our community, a place for people to learn new skills and be inspired and connect with others. We would not have had the success that we have had without the incredible community of stitchers who have supported us over the last decade and a half and our growing team of knowledgeable and passionate staff."

Romanetti started her first business, Knit-a-Gogo, in 2006 to provide knitting instructions in coffee shops throughout the DC region. When her customer base grew and her students needed quality materials, she decided to open her own shop. Romanetti left her nonprofit marketing job in 2009 and opened fibre space in Old Town Alexandria. The business outgrew its location in 2012 and again in 2017, leading it to move to its permanent location at 1319 Prince Street, which is Old Town Alexandria's only historic flatiron building.

Fibre space was the location of the first off-site visit by Vice President Kamala Harris in 2021. The business also won the Alexandria Chamber of Commerce Small Business of the Year Award, and Romanetti was named to the 40 under 40 list of Chamber of Commerce Business in 2016.

While the shop's two-day sale already occurred on July 19 and 20, there are other 15th anniversary celebrations planned. Over the next few weeks and months, fibre space will launch custom yarn and accessories with vendors. In late July through the rest of 2024, the shop will re-release vintage designs of merchandise like shirts and totes inspired by the last 15 years. Shoppers can get gifts with purchases and up to 50 percent off select yarns and notions in the second floor sale area. Fibre space will also continue with special events, including movie nights and events with other local businesses. A full list of upcoming events is available on fibre space's website.
