ALEXANDRIA, VA — As Fourth of July approaches, the City of Alexandria is reminding residents that fireworks use remains illegal.

While many Virginia localities allow use of "permissible fireworks" that don't explode or shoot into the air, the City of Alexandria completely bans fireworks use. Any possession, use, storage or sale of fireworks is illegal in the city, including smaller items like sparklers.

Neighboring jurisdictions like Fairfax and Arlington counties allow use of permissible fireworks on privare properties, but those aren't allowed in city limits. A fireworks violation can result in a class 1 misdemeanor with a fine up to $2,500, 12 months in jail or both.

"The safety of the community is all our responsibility, so we encourage everyone to celebrate the Fourth of July holiday safely," said Fire and EMS Chief Corey Smedley in a statement. "Our Fire Marshal’s Office remains diligent and to protect people, businesses and property, they will enforce the City’s ban on all fireworks used within city limits."

The only exception to the city's fireworks ban is city-sponsored fireworks displays with a permit. The Alexandria 274th/USA 247th Birthday Celebration and Fireworks is scheduled for Saturday, July 4, and there are other fireworks events scheduled around the region.

The fire department cites data from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission showing nine deaths and an estimated 11,500 people visiting emergency rooms in the U.S. due to fireworks misuse in 2021. Between 2005 and 2020, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission reported 136 deaths from fireworks misuse.

Along with the potential for injury, fire officials say fireworks can cause a risk to residential and business properties. Last year, the Alexandria Fire Department responded to a balcony fire resulting from fireworks landing on balcony furniture.

Fireworks violations in Alexandria can be reported to the Alexandria Police non-emergency number at 703-746-4444, while emergencies should be directed to 911.
